The utter power in this picture is hard to look away from. Its contrast and balance make this one of the most intriguing landscape shots that I've seen in a long time. The picture is perfectly cropped and shadowed, and it almost seems to have a dream-like quality.
As I've mentioned, the contrast is really cool. I love the texture in the sky, and how the exposure is at it's highest in the middle, where it reflects off of the wet sand / water in a very cool way. I think the most interesting parts of the sky are the transitions from dark to light – very cool definition. The colour is quite unworldly, but once you get used to it, it's mildly appealing. The transition of colour works surprisingly well, I think because of the red-toned houses and the brown sand, which allow there to be a comfortable shift to a neutral zone. The colours really fit the title, that's for sure. The balane is great, too. I've already pointed out how useful the horizon is in this picture, and the buildings are perfectly located to be part light, part shadow.
On the edges, where the shadows frame the shot, there are a lot of horizontal lines (this is especially visible on the right), which make it seem like I'm hurtling towards the picture, in an unsettling way. Very impressive.
