What is the Atomium ?

Conceived by the engineer André Waterkeyn and set up by the architects André and Jean Polack for the World Fair of Brussels of 1958, Atomium is a monument of Brussels, Belgium. It represents the elementary stitch of the iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times. It was also a reference to nine old Belgian provinces (now are ten with the split of Brabant today).

Like the Manneken Pis and "La grand place", Atomium is a symbol of the capital of Belgium. It's a building halfway between the sculpture and the architecture which peaks in 102 m.

Symbolically, Atomium embodies the boldness of a period which wanted to confront the fate of the Humanity with the scientific discoveries.

The construction of Atomium was a technical exploit. On nine balls, six are made open to the public, each containing two main floors and a lower floor reserved for the service. The central Tube contains the fastest elevator of her time (5 m/s). Escalators installed in the oblique tubes, count among the longest of Europe. The biggest measure 35 m of length.

Atomium, conceived to stay six months, was not intended to survive the international Exhibition of 1958. But its popularity and its success made a major element of the Brussels landscape. Its destruction was thus put back year by year until be abandoned.

Thank you. The Atomium sorta inspired my Convention tales' 'Trojan-Class' Rock Tugs.

"Two rings of five spheres, linked by chubby tubes, they looked like big toys. But the 'Janes in Space' pic showed 'Dingbat', a Mk-14 Trojan Class Rock Tug, crewed and part owned by Dave & Genny Bately and family. Originally rated 17.4 kTg, now a small photo-clip showed it minus Transit Can, boosting six brim-full 'City' tanks, each 125 * 50 metres with a dozen kilo-tonnes of slurried hydrogen apiece, from the 3-g dock at Garuul Deep..."
